U16 and Second XI hockey festivals

Pre-season evaluation of hockey talent

COACH MIKE REED TOOK THE U16 HOCKEY SAINTS to Westville Girls' High School's ** water-based, artifical-surface hockey field for a short-sharp tounament organised by Westville Boys' High School on Friday and Saturday to see what the Saints were really like in a string of match situations, and came away with some satisfying results. They gave 100% commitment in the field. In 100% humidity and 33 degrees C in the shade, Kalin scored all but one of the goals. David Krone had a show-in on Saturday afternoon.

The results of these pre-season tournaments are important in giving pointers to the boys and coaches. Friday afternoon's game against Northwood resulted in a surprising 0-1 loss for the Saints. The night game at 7pm against Westville saw Kalin Nundlall score an equalising goal to end in a 1-1 draw. This morning's game against DHS had St Charles College beat them again, this time with a goal from Kalin Nundlall (1-0) (last week the Saints came with with a last-minute 3-2 win against this side), and the high-noon game saw a frustrating first half with umpteen close things on the Clifton College goal where only two goals resulted, but after the change-over, the Saints Kalin Nundlall scored a further three goals. The second goal was courtesy David Krone.

Although this looks like the Kalin Nundlall show, he would have been ineffective if it hadn't been for the massive thinking support of the rest of the team captained by Robin Mitchell with huge support play from all the boys, all of whom had runs for the team.

The Second XI took part in a two-day tournament at Northwood where they honed their skills against a number of first teams - like Ladysmith, Pinetown and Crawford - with a mixed bag of wins, draws and losses. They were also up against Westville's and Northwood's second XIs drawing both 1-1. As with the U16 tournament, the coaches of the second XI found this to be a useful tool to gauge strengths and weaknesses for the season ahead.

Well played all of you and have a great holiday. Thanks Westville and Northwood for great little tournaments.

Saints Junior Primary

Splashes along with the football world cup

THE CITY TEMPERATURES TODAY OF 31 degrees C were perfect for the Junior Primary swimming gala. Held in the Prep School's 1m-deep training pool this morning, the JP boys showed off their new-found talents in the pool. With the football world cup just around the corner is was appropriate that this gala should be football themed - so splash boards were dispensed with and footballs were the floatation aid of choice as the boys demonstrated their kicking (and splashing) skills in the pool. Not one to treat swimming as merely a happy splash, Ms Candice Berridge (in charge of swimming) made sure that swimming skills were tested to an appropriate level, and so it was breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke up and down the pool - with footballs or without. Well done to all the boys and the staff, particularly Mr Luciano Genario and Ms Angie Mayo for making sure this vital water skill is taught and practiced so thoroughly. Who won? Everyone did. Particularly swimming.

Fabulous end of Prep cricket season

Thanks for the visit, Clifton NR

1
2

HAVING WON THE TOSS THE SAINTS Junior First cricket XI elected to bat on the College's oval against our visiting friends, Clifton Nottingham Road. Thanks largely to Luke Barnard and Michael Darroch (45) the Saints went to tea at 25 overs of their 50-over game with 75 runs on the board. Having stayed at the crease for 29 overs Barnard, being clean-bowled was an unfortunate way to go out. He was replaced by Jody Saayman. Darroch can be described as solid and dependable, while Saayman can have a "very exciting" label attached to him - as he launched fours intelligently around the park to haul in 53 fabulous runs.  In spite of being told to rotate the strike, William Squires treated the last overs of the innings as if it were a twenty/20 encounter - to be sure, he rotated his bat - to clock up 12 runs in a swash-buckling, late-match cameo taking the score past the psychological 200 barrier in so doing. Not too shabby Billy basher! The Saints' total of 206 for 8 in their 50 overs represented a run rate of 4.12 as the boys went to lunch.

The Clifton reply after lunch got off to a faltering start with 2 early wickets down and, at 16 overs, just 37 runs were on the board. Clifton had dug themselves into a hole in which Declan Cox, William Squires, Jody Saayman and Mo Jassat (4 for 15) were intent on keeping them - as they bowled tight lines and lengths. Sam Hines helped with a catch in the deep off a juicy full toss from Squires. The visitors' runs came mainly off loose deliveries which the good Clifton batsmen punished - hard. It was a battle royal for survival for both teams. Another point in the mix was that Clifton's top cricketer was not playing because of illness.

The morning had been hot and humid, but the weather gradually closed in during the afternoon. After tea as thunder rumbled all around the city with a stormy, blustery wind blowing from the north east, Clifton were reeling at 70 for 6 after 27 overs - a run rate of 2.6. In the gloomy conditions as their anxiety to hit the runs grew, Clifton gave away wickets. In a race against the weather, the tight bowling from the Saints saw to it that Clifton were all out for 86 in 31 overs. St Charles College Prep won by the surprisingly large margin of 120 runs.

Thanks for the game Clifton, and for the visit. The parents of the Prep cricketers are also thanked for the meals they supplied and prepared during the term. Well played to both teams.

Well done to coaches Rowan Irons, Robbie Coutts and Chad Barron on an intriuging season which saw a group of energetic boys gradually focus on the job in hand while they meshed as a team - which went from strength to strength. The scalps of Pelham, Merchiston and Clifton Nottingham Road, amongst many others, bear testimony to the levels to which St Charles College Prep School cricket has risen. But boys, this is merely the end of the beginning - the road ahead is long and hard. Thank you to all the teams we played against this term and well done to those teams which beat us. Cricket will be back in the fourth term. We look forward to it eagerly.

Rainbow day for Saints

Hockey boys shine

1

ON THE WATER-BASED HOCKEY FIELD which Durban High School uses the St Charles College hockey boys had a good Friday afternoon (19 March) in the high temperatures we are still currently experiencing in KwaZulu-Natal.

After a quiet and somewhat reserved opening ten minutes during which time the hosts scored, the First XI suddenly came alive as Kalin Nundlall fired home the first goal (Photo 3 - courtesy of Mr Kevin Rall). The second half saw repeated attacks on the DHS goal - no less than four serious attempts which simply didn't go in. Finally, with a clever back flick from Ullie Fischer (Photo 4) through an obvious gap in the DHS defence (sequence 4a), with Gareth Dukes (and the goal mouth) waiting, Dukes duly slotted in the easiest of goals - team work par excellence. At all times the Saints' defence was superb in the hands of Gareth Rall, Keith Stanger (who had a spectacular game)(Photo 5), Ryan Sclanders, Keagan Davids (Photo 6), Jonathan Esteves and Vaughn Moses. Mzamo Cele (Photo 9) had a superb game getting under the feet of the central attackers effectively frustrating their play. Gareth Dukes had a second very easy crack at the goal mouth to take the Saints First XI score to 3-1 at the close of the game.

The U16As came away with a 3-2 thriller win - in the last seconds of the game. All away games against DHS were won by the visitors.

Saturday 20 March saw the Saints rugby boys in action at St Thomas's Road in the unremitting heat with its full-on Durban humidity - with the First XV playing at 2pm. DHS won the game 10 - 3.

Meanwhile, on the Saints hockey field on Saturday morning the U16Ds and U16Cs were up against Maritzburg College U16F and U16C repectively. Results of the U16Ds was not particularly inspiring with the MCollege boys winning easily (somethinglike 9-1), but the Cs were a lot more competitive. Great to have Maritzburg College over here at Harwin Road - thanks for the games and well played to all the players.

Saints go marching in - to Hilton

Hockey and rugby start again

1

IT MUST BE THE HOT WEATHER we've been having for the past four weeks which gives the illusion that the winter sports have started earlier this year, but they started at much the same time last year when St Charles played Pionier away. This year they played Hilton College at Hilton for a full round of hockey and rugby fixtures.

The Senior Hockey First XI played superbly, leading 1-0 for a long while, but finally drawing 2-all with goals from Michael Esteves and a penalty courtesy of Keagan Davids.

It was fantastic to see so many Old Boys arrive to support the teams - thank you, the boys appreciate it hugely.

Thank you for a great day, Hilton College, where the temperatures were a full five or more degrees lower than they would have been in the capital - still, they were in the lower 30s during the middle of the day. Well done on all the victories, and well played to all the boys.

The Prep School boys played the sensible game for this weather - cricket - against Virginia Senior Primary School with the First XI plying their trade on the glorious St Charles College oval. (Sorry if this sounds like Charles Fortune, but that's a fact!) The Prep Saints scored 230 for 6 in their 50 overs, and proceeded to bowl the visitors out for 68 - a great (happy) birthday present for young William Squires who took one wicket. Great too to see Zac Koutsouris firing 82 with Michael Darroch 44, Jody Saayman 30 and Samuel Hines 43* while Mo Jassat reeled in 3 for 13 - as the Junior First Saints XI won by 162 runs. In the Prep Third XI Campbell McDuling took 3 wickets for 1 run. Thanks for the visit Virginia - and well done to all the boys.

Mid-week games

Prep First XI take on Somerset

THE LADS FROM SOMERSET COLLEGE, in the Western Cape paid us a visit this afternoon for a 20-over game which saw them knock up 84 runs for 3 - the Saints reply was contained by excellent bowling and fielding which saw our lads fall short of the required total by 10 runs. Thanks for the visit Somerset and well played - to all the boys.

On the right is Craig van der Merwe - we caught up with this young man who was shifted from the Third to the First XI as a consequence of his 103-not-out a couple of weeks ago.

While the cricketers waited to bat, the parents were very anxious for a win.

And on the western side of the oval some of the hockey boys had some fun with their coach ahead of a run on the artificial turf.

Inter-House Swimming Gala

Records galore broken

THE INTER-HOUSE GALA AT 5PM THIS EVENING signalled the end of the swimming season and brought with it a considerable number of records. Swimmers who shone were the De Beer twins, Johan and Victor as well as new boy into the College, Daniel Ferreira (below, leading the first event of the gala, the U14 breast stroke). Conway House won the event again this year. Well done to all the swimmers and thanks to the staff who helped make this event run smoothly.

Cricket season . . .

. . . ends on a high note

1

WITH THE SAINTS FIRST XI GAME OUT OF THE WAY on Thursday last it was over to the Seconds and other sides to carry the St Charles College flag today, Saturday. The Seconds, who often play on the our oval visited their opposite numbers in the Clifton College set-up in Durban, whille the U16As had their turn on our oval. It was great to see young men like Dean Robinson (95) and Matthew Ford operating at their age-group level and being able to strike the ball without the additional pressures which the First Xi mantle brings. An informal arrangement between the two Schools allowed for two First XI players who are U16 to play in the two School's teams. This allowed Robin Mitchell (above, ball top left), in turn, to have a less restrained game than he might have otherwise had. Travis Mitchell bowled well with 3 for 11. The U16As won by 120 runs.

On Conway field at the entrance to the College the Junior First XI had an tough time - as anticipated. They fielded superbly until tea, and then battled as Durban's Clifton Prep scampered away with the runs and then, with a bowling attack which the Lambert Road boys brought to Pietermaritzburg with them, 188 runs in 45 overs was a bridge too far for our well-exposed Junior First XI. Well-exposed? How about a day-night against Pelham on Monday, a Country Districts Cricket (CDC) U13 selection game Friday afternoon, as well as two more CDC selection games tomorrow, Sunday? Some would say 'over-exposed'. They'll sleep well tomorrow.

On Harwin field, the U15A side saw opener, Andrew Darroch, all but carry his bat through the innings for a patient 40 runs, and he and Pavi Indjarith took 7 wickets between them - Andrew 4 for 26 and Pavi 3. Russell Whitely knocked up a fluent 70*. The U15As were understandably chuffed with their 7-wicket win.

All results are on the Results page of this web site.

This early-March, hot, summer's day saw the last of the cricket for this part of the year. The oval ball holds sway at the College from tomorrow as SCC rugby trials take place Sunday afternoon - and there is hockey too, as the "winter" sports codes start next Saturday! Apparently, the reason the winter sports are starting in summer this year is to complete all the rugby fixtures before the schools' break up ahead of the 11 June start of FIFA's World Cup which takes place from then until 11 July. The College has its annual Inter-House Swimming Gala on Wednesday 10 March in the evening at 5pm.

Saints water polo

Afternoon friendly vs Scottburgh

THE SECOND TEAM WATER POLO SQUAD was out this afternoon at the UKZN pool for a match against Scottburgh High School's first team. In a game with a really great atmosphere, the lads from the coast were much stronger than the Saints who had a enjoyable match learning a lot from a team which showed much experience. Thanks for travelling such a long way for a game Scottburgh, and well done to all the players.

College Saints in action

45-over-a-side match vs Clifton College

THURSDAY WAS HEAVILY CLOUDY ALL DAY but rainless - until the St Charles College innings was over. During the supper break at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg oval, the mist became mizzle and then drizzle to welcome the Saints back onto the field to bowl with a wet ball against Durban visitors, Clifton College.

Head of Sport at St Charles College, Mr Dave Karlsen writes,

"First XI Squad: Gareth Dukes (Capt), Gregory Ford, Ryan Sclanders, Paul Vincent, Mzamo Cele, Grant Stone, Matthew Ford, Burton Weakley, Keagan  Davids, Matthew Tweddle, Dexter Hobbs

Clifton won the toss on a balmy Thursday evening and did not hesitate in putting St Charles in to bat. With all the wet weather around the pitch was very grassy and slightly soft. It looked a very good toss to win.
Once again the top order were under pressure and once again they responded well with Gregory Ford (29) and Ryan Sclanders (61) putting together a solid stand of 63 after the early loss of Dexter Hobbs. The batsmen all chipped in although we regularly lost wickets and Grant Stone (39) steadied the ship with the rock-solid Sclanders putting together a stand of 62. The innings closed on the 3rd last ball of the 45th over with St Charles posting a very good score of 203.
Looking at the batting history on the UKZN Pietermaritzburg oval this was probably 30 runs over par which in bowler-friendly conditions was a top effort.
Once again the weather played a major role and after two overs rain closed proceedings for the night.

St Charles College: 222for 8
Ryan Sclanders 61, Grant Stone, Gregory Ford 29,
Clifton College: 3 for 0 after 2 overs
Result: Rain stops play – match drawn"

Junior First XI day-night tussle

45-over-a-side match vs Pelham

BECAUSE THE UNIVERSITY OVAL WAS BEING WATERED the match scheduled there this afternoon and evening between the Saints Junior First XI and Pelham Senior Primary School Firsts was moved to Merchiston's oval. The game got underway at 3pm with hosts, Pelham, winning the toss and understandably electing to bat. They initially made heavy weather of the exercise thanks to the tight line-and-length fast bowling of Saints Declan Cox and William Squires. Mo Jassat and Jody Saayman saw off the Pelham middle order which at one stage began to look very threatening, while Michael Darroch finished off proceedings. Riley Coutts dismissed two opposition players with fine catches (one leaping sideways into the air to take the ball with one hand), as well as the run out of a key Pelham batsman - who alone was worth at least 40 runs to Pelham. The hosts were all back at the side of the field for 131 in the 40th over - and a run rate of 2.9 was required of the Saints to pull this one off.

On paper, with the Saints recent run rates of 7.5 versus Merchiston and 7.8 against the Dads, it seemed this would be a doddle. Pelham had other ideas. Batting under lights is never easy at the best of times, so Pelham's had been a good toss to win. With Zac Koutsouris out on the first ball which swung in and wrecked the neat formation of timber behind him, a lot of blame looked as if it could be placed on that coin and the way it had landed earlier, supported by what the Saints knew was a talented team of bowlers. Jeremy Davidson (9 runs) joined opener, Luke Barnard, in the centre where both found it very tough going with the run rate initially hovering around 2.9 but dropping alarmingly to about 2.1 for a while. The frequent shouts from Pelham's players of "What a ball, what a ball!" typified much of the early part of the excellent Pelham bowling attack which saw the Saints really battle under the moonlit sky. Michael Darroch then joined Luke Barnard at the crease. Starting slowly as he does, Darroch felt his way and, after a powerfully cut 4, cover-drove his way off his front foot to a confident 50 while Barnard rotated the strike - we've seen this solid kind of play from the younger Darroch before - last year he turned the match around against Papplewick, and it looked like more of the same here with some powerful textbook shots aimed perfectly into the gaps. There must be feline blood in the Barnard family as he used up at least six of the nine lives he apparently has with heart-stopping dropped catches and other near misses off his batting. Once Michael Darroch was out, Jody Saayman (7*) held the game together with Barnard as they patiently took the score to 132 for 3 in 35 overs as the St Charles Prep First XI won the game by 7 wickets.

For the webmaster Michael Darroch stood out with his beligerent 50, his accurate death bowling and a stinging catch at first slip - a good, all-round performance from this reserved young man. In spite of all the near misses, Barnard's performance was superb as he carried his bat for the innings with a healthy accumulation of 34* runs. Mo Jassat was a busy captain who kept his team on the tips of their toes and always interested - he took 2 for 24. Declan Cox was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 20 in 9 overs. But, all things considered, it was a great team effort with all the Prep Saints playing their part.

Thanks, Pelham, for hosting us to a braai at Merchiston, thanks for the match, and thanks too to the Merchie Mudrats for the use of their facilites. Well played to all the boys.
